What Can Yoga Do for You?

Yoga focuses on fine-tuning our movements, encouraging our weak parts to strengthen and stiff parts to stretch, awakening and realigning the body. When the body is properly aligned, less muscular work is required and relaxation and healing can occur more easily. 

Along with improved functioning of internal organs and the nervous system, devoted yoga students enjoy relief from symptoms of fatigue, stress, and injury. Yoga can help improve many physical limitations in areas such as the back and joints. Yoga is sometimes used as a natural form of pain relief, because it is thought to help regulate the brain's pain center. Because of the attention to breathing and reducing tension, it can help with pain management.

Our next 6-week session begins Monday, June 20, 2016!

  In order to celebrate the International Day of Yoga on June 21, we will be doing a special sequence all week with some modifications depending on the class and needs of the students. If you are new to yoga, this sequence is a great place to start your practice.  We are also offering $10 off your first session at OYC!   For more experienced students, additional asanas and variations will be added.  Join us in our celebration!


The PACE and Mamaste classes will not be held until further notice.  Our wonderful instructor Britt Duque is moving to Austin July 1.  We wish her and her family well! 


Join us for classes that will develop strength, stamina, concentration, flexibility, and more.  Using physical alignment as a starting point, Iyengar yoga encourages the spread of intelligence throughout the body, the growth of self-awareness, and an experience of the asanas as a form of"meditation in action."  Practicing mindfulness is a discipline taught throughout the method.

 Students in Iyengar Yoga begin with basic standing poses.  In time, forward extensions, back extensions, twists, inversions, restorative poses, pranayama, and more.  As students mature, so does the practice.  Teachers may use props such as blankets, blocks, belts, and wall ropes to help students benefit from the poses regardless of their physical condition or level of experience. 

BKS Iyengar's revolutionary use of yoga props is now ubiquitous in yoga of all styles.  His unique teachings create the springboard that allows students to penetrate beyond the outer physical layers and explore the inner layers of mind, energy, and spirit. The two quests of the physical and the spiritual are not separate but interdependent parts of a total approach to self-mastery and enlightened living.

Restorative classes are offered the 2nd Monday, 3rd Tuesday, 4th Wednesday, and 5th Thursday of each 6-week session.
